Knowing how to walk in step with the Holy Spirit is essential to living a fulfilling and purposeful life in Christ, but what does that look like daily? It requires friendship, trust, and surrender in your relationship with the Holy Spirit. No one gets this perfect all the time, but committing our minds and our hearts to it continually is important to walking in it successfully. In this post, we will discuss 7 life changing steps to help you align with the Holy Spirit and deepen your friendship with God daily.
7 Life Changing Habits:
1. Surrender Your Will to God
The first step to walking in step with the Holy Spirit is to surrender your will to God. This means letting go of your own desires and plans and submitting them to God’s will. It’s challenging to do this, but it is essential to allow the Holy Spirit free access to lead in your life.
Spend time in prayer and ask God to help you surrender your will to Him. This looks like loving Him in every thought, every desire, in your devotion, attitudes, and in your peace. Trust He has a good plan for your life and anything he asks of us (Whether hard or easy) he is worthy of it. He’s a good God who is a rewarder of those who seek him and his Kingdom first in their lives (Hebrews 11:6, and Matthew 6:33).
“And you shall love the Lord your God out of and with your whole heart and out of and with all your soul (your life) and out of and with all your mind (with your faculty of thought and your moral understanding) and out of and with all your strength.” Mark 12:30 AMPC
Transform Your Mind to Better Know How to Walk in Step with the Holy Spirit
Once you have surrendered your will to God, it is important to stay connected to Him through prayer and reading His Word. This will help you discern His voice and direction in your life. You will not only want to read the Word of God, but also memorize it. This helps to transform your mind, which also helps you to discern God’s will for your life according to Romans 12:1-2:
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Romans 12:2 TPT
As you go about your day, ask the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts and actions. Listen for His promptings and be willing to follow His lead, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone. To walk in step with the Holy Spirit requires a daily commitment to putting God first and trusting Him to lead you on the correct path for your destiny.
2. Spend Time in Prayer & Meditation
Spending time in prayer and meditation is your lifeline to walking in step with the Holy Spirit. It allows you to speak your heart to God while also quieting your mind and focus on God’s presence. In the process, you are putting yourself in a great place to hear the Lord speak or show you something (Psalm 46:10).
Set aside time each day to pray and meditate, even if it’s just for a few minutes. You can use a prayer book or devotional to guide your prayers or speak from your heart. As you pray, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and reveal God’s will for your life. Listen for His voice and be open to His leading.
Meditation & Journaling as You Learn to Walk in Step with the Holy Spirit
Be Prepared to Write Some Things Down as You Learn How to Walk in Step with the Holy Spirit. A simple way to meditate if you aren’t familiar with it is to find a scripture and meditate or think on its meaning and then write what you feel the Holy Spirit is communicating to you from it.
After meditating on this verse, you can even pray it back again to the Lord! This can be a powerful weapon in your prayer closet! Speaking God’s word out loud in prayer for our specific needs will also put angels on assignment, so don’t hold back!
“Bless the Lord, you His angels, You mighty ones who do His commandments, Obeying the voice of His word!” Psalm 103:20 AMP
3. Study the Bible and Seek Wisdom
Another practical step to walk in step with the Holy Spirit is to study the Bible and seek wisdom. The Bible is God’s word and contains the wisdom and guidance we need to live a life that pleases Him. Make it a habit to read the Bible daily and ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you about its meaning.
Studying the Bible can also involve looking up meanings of familiar or unfamiliar words in the dictionary. Sometimes those familiar words have alternate meanings that can change your understanding of a scripture altogether. You can also look to see what those words mean in Hebrew or Greek languages as well. This can cause the meaning of the scripture to explode with more revelation in your quest to walk in step with the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 2:15).
Be a ‘Doer’ of the Word
Always be prepared to be a doer of the word as you study the Bible. Knowing the correct thing to do and not acting on it sets us up for sin. It also sets us up for deceit of ourselves (James 1:22). Disobedience and giving into your flesh will also hinder your walk with the Holy Spirit.
“In fact, the mind-set focused on the flesh fights God’s plan and refuses to submit to his direction, because it cannot! For no matter how hard they try, God finds no pleasure with those who are controlled by the flesh.” Romans 8: 7-8 TPT
Seeking wisdom from other believers, pastors, or mentors can also help you become wise. The wisdom they offer you can support you to navigate your spiritual journey. Remember, the Holy Spirit is our helper and guide. He will always lead us in the right direction if we seek Him with a humble and open heart.
4. Surround Yourself with Other Believers to Walk in Step with the Holy Spirit
One of the most important steps to walk-in step with the Holy Spirit is to surround yourself with other believers. This means finding a community of like-minded individuals who share your faith and can offer support, encouragement, and accountability. Joining a church or small group is a great way to connect with other believers. This builds relationships that will help you grow.
“Therefore, encourage and comfort one another and build up one another, just as you are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11 AMP
When you surround yourself with other believers, you can share your struggles and victories, pray together, and learn from one another’s experiences. This will help you stay focused on your spiritual journey. It will also keep you accountable in your commitment to follow the Holy Spirit’s leading.
5. Listen for the Holy Spirit’s Guidance
Another important step to walk in step with the Holy Spirit is to listen for His guidance. This means taking time to be still, be quiet, and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart. Since you took the time to pray, the Lord will want time to speak as well. Always be ready for that two-way conversation. You can do this through prayer, meditation, or sitting in silence.
“But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.” John 14:26 AMP
As you listen, pay attention to the thoughts and feelings that come to you. The Holy Spirit may speak to you through a still, small voice, or through a sense of peace or conviction. Whatever form His guidance takes, be receptive to it, and be willing to follow wherever He leads. The more you practice, the more likely you will be to hear him and God will reward your diligence.
6. Keep Your Mind Focused on the Holy Spirit
Walking in step with the Holy Spirit and staying there requires that you keep your mind focused on the things of the Spirit and what he desires for our lives. Keeping our minds set on the Spirit gives us life and peace! (Romans 8:6). It empowers us in the Spirit and allows us to have godly responses in our daily lives.
Be Mindful of ‘Shifting’ as You Learn How to Walk in Step with the Holy Spirit
Focusing our minds on our fleshly concerns (How we can gratify ourselves) will shift you out of the walk in the Spirit. Continuing to shift your mind off things of the flesh and upon the Spirit will keep you walking in step with the Spirit. This is true wisdom!
“Let me emphasize this: As you yield to the dynamic life and power of the Holy Spirit, you will abandon the cravings of your self-life. When your self-life craves the things that offend the Holy Spirit you hinder him from living free within you! And the Holy Spirit’s intense cravings hinder your self-life from dominating you!” Galatians 5:16-17 TPT
As we get good at this shifting, the Spirit will help keep you from giving into your fleshly desires. Every act of obedience in this direction empowers the Holy Spirit to have a stronger influence in your life, so don’t underestimate the simple act of obedience.
Giving into your fleshly ways can also make it more difficult to obey the Spirit, so be mindful of whether you are empowering your fleshly ways or if you are empowering the Holy Spirit into your life.
7. Memorizing Scripture to Avoid Temptation
Scripture memorization is fundamental to not only knowing God’s will for your life but also keeping you from giving in to temptation. All of us face temptation and struggles. That is just a fact. The enemy of our soul does not like the fact that we walk in step with the Holy Spirit so he will try to cause you to stumble.
The best way to prepare for the struggles that will come is to memorize the scripture about it. Romans 8 is an excellent place to begin. When we memorize scripture, we become just like Jesus when he defeated the Devil in the wilderness. His chief weapon was speaking the scripture back at the Devil. By resisting the Devil in this way, he will flee leaving you now able to walk in step with the Holy Spirit (James 4:7).
